Tennessee Williams’ memory play is narrated by Tom Wingfield, as he recalls his mother Amanda Wingfield and his sister Laura, and their life in St. Louis. Laura’s crippling shyness prevents her from leaving the house, much less meeting potential Gentleman Callers, prefering to tend her collection of glass animals. Tom brings his friend Jim home for dinner, but Jim has a girl already. Laura gives him the now-damaged glass unicorn from her collection. Amanda worries for the future with her daughter, as Tom leaves home, never to return.
