John Merrick, called The Elephant Man due to disfigurement from disease, is on display in a London freak show, where he is seen by surgeon Frederick Treves. Treves attempts to study Merrick's condition and provide him with some semblance of a 'normal' life, though Merrick must spend it in London Hospital. As his fame spreads, many high-society people come to visit Merrick, and many donate to his continued care.
Based on the life of Joseph Merrick, who was afflicted with Proteus Syndrome.
