An island known as The Jewel of the Antilles is ruled by four gods: Asaka (Mother Earth), Agwe (god of Water), Erzulie (goddess of Love) and Papa Ge (demon of Death). After a devastating storm, young Ti Moune is found in a tree and raised by Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian on the peasant side of the Island. Erzulie wants to prove love is stronger than death, and gifts the grown-up Ti Moune to find love with Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy grand homme from the other side of the island. Ti Moune gives her life to save Daniel, and the gods are so moved by her sacrifice, Asaka brings her back as a tree, where a peasant girl and grand homme boy once again find love.
