During a seance, Madame Arcati summons Elvira, the dead first wife of novelist Charles Condemine. His current, very much alive, wife Ruth is not amused. Elvira disrupts their wedded bliss, ultimately by attempting to kill Charles so he can spend eternity with her in the afterlife. When Ruth ends up dead, Charles finds himself haunted to both wives.
