A madcap collection of characters reside in the Vanderhof-Sycamore-Carmichael family home. Grandpa Vanderhof is the patriarch, living with his daughter Penny and her husband Paul Sycamore. Their older daughter Essie makes candy and practices ballet while her husband Ed Carmichael plays the xylophone. Mr. DePinna, Reba the maid, Mr. Kolenkhov, and Rebas boyfriend Donald share in the family activities, much to the chagrin of younger daughter Alice Sycamore. She is the normal one of the family, and engaged to Tony Kirby, the son of a wealthy businessman. The families clash, but all works out in the end!
