The painter Mario Cavaradossi hides escaped political prisoner Cesare Angelotti in a Roman church, as his beloved, the diva Floria Tosca, comes to see him. She flies into a jealous rage at the site of his current portrait but finally calms down. The evil police chief Scarpia hunts for Angelotti, suspecting Cavaradossi of aiding him. Scarpia also longs for Tosca, submitting her lover to torture and a threatened execution. Tosca agrees to Scarpia's advances to save Cavaradossi from execution, then kills Scarpia and flees with safe-passage vouchers. Cavaradossi is still executed, and Tosca throws herself from the parapet in desperation and remorse.
