Prospero, the Duke of Milan, has been usurped by his younger brother, Antonio. Prospero escapes with his infant daughter Miranda to a remote island, where Prospero uses sorcery and magic to control the monster Caliban and the spirit Ariel. When Antonio, along with King Alonso of Naples and several lords, are caught in a tempest (of Prospero's doing), they are shipwrecked on the same island. Miranda and the king's son, Ferdinand, fall in love, Prospero uses his magic to revenge himself and reclaim his dukedom, and he finally sets Ariel free as all the nobility leave the island.
