The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 provide the background for the story of John Proctor, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor. Reverend Parris, Reverend Hale, Judge Hathorne and Deputy Governor Danforth preside over the trials of accused witches Rebecca Nurse, Tituba the slave, Giles Corey and Elizabeth Proctor, among others. Local girls Mary Warren, Mercy Lewis, Suzanna Walcott, and Betty Parris claim they are being tortured by the devils worshippers and the hysteria builds as they continue to accuse their neighbors. Abigail Williams plots to have Elizabeth Proctor hanged, so she can wed John Proctor. The truth is finally revealed when Abigail runs away, and Elizabeth and John are released from jail.
