Set during the American Civil War, the story revolves around Charlie Anderson and his family on their farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Charlie wants to stay out of the war, but it comes to him - his youngest son Robert is kidnapped by Union soldiers, his oldest son Jacob is shot by a sniper, and his second eldest son James is killed by deserters along with his wife Anne. Charlie’s daughter Jenny marries Sam, who enlists with the Confederate Army but is captured and needs to be rescued from a POW train. Charlie is finally reunited with Robert.
