Adult Michael narrates this memory play, set during the summer of 1936. The five Mundy sisters - Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose and Christina - abide in a cottage outside Ballybeg, County Donegal, along with their brother Jack, a recently-returned missionary priest in Uganda, and Christina’s son Michael. With little work available other than Kate’s teaching position, the family subsists on meager crumbs, but come alive when music plays on their faulty radio and they commence with wild Irish dancing. Gerry, Michael’s father, comes to visit, perhaps to finally marry Christina, or to say goodbye as he plans to fight Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Brian Friel’s play is loosely based on his own childhood with his mother and aunts.
