Set in 1820s Seville, the opera opens outside the cigarette factory, where Carmen flirts with local boys and soldiers. The peasant girl Micaela searches for her love, the soldier Don Jose. Don Jose, Captain Zuniga, and the famous toreador Escamillo all fall for Carmen’s charms, but tragedy strikes in the final act.
