Rosalind must escape from her usurping uncle, so in disguise as the young man Ganymede, she flees to the Forest of Arden with her cousin Celia. They meet a variety of characters, including the mournful Jaques who speaks one of Shakespeare's most famous monologues. Lovelorn Orlando also wanders the forest, leaving notes for his beloved Rosalind. The shepherd Silvio attempts to woo shepherdess Phebe, who in turn attempts to woo 'Ganymede'. Eventually, the rightful duke returns to his lands, Rosalind returns to her true form, and the lovers all marry their intended partners.
