George Bernard Shaw’s comedy is set during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. Raina Petkoff is engaged to war hero Sergius Saranoff, but when Swiss mercenary Captain Bluntschli climbs through her window one night, her views of war are altered. After the war, Raina and Sergius end their engagement, as Sergius flirts with Raina’s maid Louka. Bluntschli returns to Raina’s home, where her father Major Petkoff asks his help to send troops home. Bluntschli finally reveals his status as a wealthy businessman and proposes to Raina.
