Two timelines intertwine at an English estate: the family and guests of 1809; and contemporary researchers looking into the past. Young Thomasina Coverly is a mathematical prodigy of 1809, studying with her tutor Septimus. Ezra Chater, Lady Croom, and Richard Noakes make up part of the party, as well as the unseen Lord Byron and Charity Chater. In the current day, author Hannah Jarvis and university don Bernard Nightingale have both come to the estate to research the past; their discoveries solve some mysteries, as they play out in real time for the earlier occupants.
Considered by many to be Tom Stoppard's best play, it has been described as "a perfect marriage of ideas and high comedy".
